Abstract
The present thesis reports the work done in aqueous and emulsion polymerizations of
methacrylonitrile (MAN) monomer. This includes the kinetic investigation of methacrylonitrile
polymerization in the presence of sodium Lauryl sulphate (NaLS) as micelle generator and potassium
persulphate (KPS) as initiator. In order to understand the role of micelle generator in emulsion
polymerization of methacrylonitrile, the polymerization has also been investigated
in the absence of micelle generator. In order to throw light on the mode of the chain initiation, the
mechanism of potassium persulphate decomposition in the presence of methacrylonitrile has been
studied. A comparative study on the polymerizations of acrylonitrile and of methacrylonitrile has
been made and a mechanism for the growth of polymers of methacrylonitrile has been postulated on
the basis of experimental results.
Besides, comprehensive reviews on (i) a4ueous and emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomers in
general (ii) polymerization of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile and (iii) thermal decomposition of
potassium persulphate in 84ueous solutions have been written in Chapter I and II.
